Hepting, Daryl H., Latifi, Leila and Oriet, Chris (2009): In search of a perceptual basis for interacting with parametric images. In: Proceedings of the 2009 Conference on Creativity and Cognition 2009. pp. 377-378.

Many people appreciate the aesthetics of fractal images, but few are inclined to engage in the mathematics needed to create them. Finding a perceptual basis for interacting with parametric images like fractals could make the parameter space more accessible, which is an important step towards democratizing this creative activity. This paper discusses an experiment to gather perceptions of fractal images and compare them with computational analyses.

Hepting, Daryl H. (2007): Software for systematic and imaginative exploration. In: Proceedings of the 2007 Conference on Creativity and Cognition 2007, Washington DC, USA. pp. 253-254.

This paper describes a software system that has been designed to enhance individual creativity. It was once thought that the era of information visualization would empower people and enable a democratization of visual thinking. Today, many barriers to this democratization still exist. The software, called cogito, is designed from the perspective that it is possible, with appropriate support, to meaningfully explore a very large set of alternatives without becoming overwhelmed. This paper discusses the design choices made for the software, the architecture of the system, and the experience gained in a variety of applications.

What is this field of Human-Computer Interaction? People are quite different from computers. This is hardly a novel observation, but whenever people use computers, there is necessarily a zone of mutual accommodation and this defines our area of interest. People are so adaptable that they are capable of shouldering the entire burden of accommodation to an artifact, but skillful designers make large parts of this burden vanish by adapting the artifact to its users. To understand successful design requires an understanding of the technology, the person, and their mutual interaction [...]
