Jones, Michael, Plott, Christopher, Jones, Melvin and Olthoff, Thomas (2010): THE CAB TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION LAB: A LOCOMOTIVE SIMULATOR FOR HUMAN FACTORS RESEARCH. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 54th Annual Meeting 2010. pp. 2110-2114.

The paper describes a new human factors research capability for the US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) -- The Cab Technology Integration Laboratory (CTIL). The FRA sponsored the development of the CTIL in order to assess locomotive crew performance with the integration of new market controls, displays, and automation in the locomotive cab environment. Additionally, the CTIL will be used to assess and demonstrate new technologies and workstation configurations that may enhance human performance and human reliability by increasing the locomotive engineer's capabilities to communicate, plan, and control locomotives within the railroad system. The CTIL provides a platform for integration and prototyping of new locomotive cab technologies to assess the impact of the human-machine interface on locomotive crew performance as new capabilities are mandated to meet safety, cost, and security requirements.

Small, Ronald, Plott, Christopher and McDermott, Patricia L. (2009): The Use of Concept Maps to Support Human-System Integration Requirements: Highlighting the Human Touch Points. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 53rd Annual Meeting 2009. pp. 106-110.

Concept maps are graphical representations of a body of knowledge and the relationships between parts of that knowledge. Concept maps help people see relationships among ideas and the range of topics to be considered in a concise form. The project discussed in this paper uses concept maps to support the design and development of a human-system integration (HSI) assessment tool to help system acquisition staff develop HSI requirements, to review deliverables for completeness, and to conduct or review HSI evaluations during the system acquisition process. Concept maps, used in this novel way, can help ensure that the essential aspects of a system or a problem are captured. Exemplar systems to be mapped are the F-15E, Stratcom's Global Operations Center (GOC), and the Predator unmanned aerial system.

Plott, Christopher, Wachtel, Jerry and Laughery, K. Ronald (1988): Operational Assessment of Simulator Fidelity in the Nuclear Industry. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 32nd Annual Meeting 1988. pp. 705-709.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has recently developed a procedure for inspecting nuclear power plant control room simulators. These inspections will ensure that the simulator has sufficient fidelity to produce an appropriate medium for the conduct of operator licensing examinations. The difficulty in obtaining objective data for the assessment of fidelity, particularly for transient or accident events, requires that the inspection be performed primarily from a behavioral perspective rather than a strictly engineering perspective. This paper briefly describes the procedure developed.
