Cao, Yujia, Theune, Mariët and Nijholt, Anton (2009): Modality effects on cognitive load and performance in high-load information presentation. In: Proceedings of the 2009 International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2009. pp. 335-344. Available online

In this study, we argue that modality planning in multimodal presentation systems needs to consider the modality characteristics at not only the presentational level but also the cognitive level, especially in a situation where the information load is high and the user task is time-critical. As a first step towards automatic cognitive-aware modality planning, we integrated the effect of different modalities on cognitive load and performance, using a high-load information presentation scenario. Mainly based on modality-related psychology theories, we selected five modality conditions (text, image, text+image, text+speech, and text+sound) and made hypotheses about their effects on cognitive load. Modality effects were evaluated by two cognitive load measurements and two performance measurements. Results confirmed most of the predicted modality effects, and showed that these effects become significant when the information load and the task demand are high. The findings of this study suggest that it is highly necessary to encode modality-related principles of human cognition into the modality planning procedure for systems that support high-load human-computer interaction.

Nijholt, Anton, Tan, Desney S., Allison, Brendan, Milan, Jose del R. and Graimann, Bernhard (2008): Brain-computer interfaces for HCI and games. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 5-10, 2008. pp. 3925-3928. Available online

In this workshop we study the research themes and the state-of-the-art of brain-computer interaction. Brain-computer interface research has seen much progress in the medical domain, for example for prosthesis control or as biofeedback therapy for the treatment of neurological disorders. Here, however, we look at brain-computer interaction especially as it applies to research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Through this workshop and continuing discussions, we aim to define research approaches and applications that apply to disabled and able-bodied users across a variety of real-world usage scenarios. Entertainment and game design is one of the application areas that will be considered.

Vyas, Dhaval, Heylen, Dirk, Eliens, Anton and Nijholt, Anton (2007): Experiencing-in-the-world: using pragmatist philosophy to design for aesthetic experience. In: Proceedings of DUX07 Designing for User eXperiences 2007. p. 8. Available online

With the growing use of personal and ubiquitous computing technology, an increase is seen in utilizing aesthetic aspects for designing interactive systems. The use of aesthetic interpretations, however, has differed in different applications, often lacking a coherent and holistic meaning of aesthetics. In this paper we provide an account on aesthetics, utilizing the pragmatist perspective, which can be used as a framework to design for aesthetic experience in interactive systems. We discuss seven major themes of aesthetic experience. Using our framework we discuss two design examples. In the first example -- Panorama, the framework is used to inform the design process and making design decisions for supporting aesthetic social awareness in an academic work environment. In the second example -- Virtual Dancer, the framework is used to analyze the aesthetics of an entertainment experience and to elicit further improvements. In the end we discuss the role of aesthetics in the design of interactive systems.

Nijholt, Anton and Traum, David (2005): The virtuality continuum revisited. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2005 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2005. pp. 2132-2133. Available online

We survey the themes and the aims of a workshop devoted to the state-of-the-art virtuality continuum. In this continuum, ranging from fully virtual to real physical environments, allowing for mixed, augmented and desktop virtual reality, several perspectives can be taken. Originally, the emphasis was on display technologies. Here we take the perspective of the inhabited environment, that is, environments positioned somewhere on this continuum that are inhabited by virtual (embodied) agents, that interact with each other and with their human partners. Hence, we look at it from the multi-party interaction perspective. In this workshop we will investigate the current state of the art, its shortcomings and a future research agenda.

In: Beaudouin-Lafon, Michel and Jacob, Robert J. K. (eds.) Proceedings of the ACM CHI 2001 Human Factors in Computing Systems Conference March 31 - April 5, 2001, Seattle, Washington, USA. pp. 301-308. Available online

In multi-agent, multi-user environments, users as well as agents should have a means of establishing who is talking to whom. In this paper, we present an experiment aimed at evaluating whether gaze directional cues of users could be used for this purpose. Using an eye tracker, we measured subject gaze at the faces of conversational partners during four-person conversations. Results indicate that when someone is listening or speaking to individuals, there is indeed a high probability that the person looked at is the person listened
