Spaulding, Aaron, Gajos, Krzysztof Z., Jameson, Anthony, Kristensson, Per Ola, Bunt, Andrea and Haines, Will (2009): Usable intelligent interactive systems: CHI 2009 special interest group meeting. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2009 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2009. pp. 2743-2746. Available online

The AI and HCI communities have often been characterized as having opposing views of how humans and computers should interact" observes Winograd in Shifting Viewpoints. It is time to narrow this gap. What was once considered the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) research can now be found in commercial products. While some have failed, others, such as face detection in digital cameras or product recommendation systems, have become so mainstream they are no longer thought of as artificial intelligence. This special interest group provides a forum to examine the apparent gap between HCI and AI communities, to explore how intelligent technologies can enable novel interaction with computation, and to investigate the challenges associated with understanding human abilities, limitations, and preferences in order to drive the design of intelligent interactive systems.

The goal of this full-day workshop is to arrive at a synthesis of knowledge that will help people who work with intelligent user interfaces to predict and explain how users' attitudes and behavior toward aspects of such systems (a) differ from one user to the next and (b) change over time.

Spaulding, Aaron, Jameson, Anthony, Grudin, Jonathan, Yorke-Smith, Neil and Zaientz, Jack (2008): Usable artificial intelligence. In: Proceedings of ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems April 5-10, 2008. pp. 3937-3940. Available online

"The AI and HCI communities have often been characterized as having opposing views of how humans and computers should interact" observes Winograd in "Shifting Viewpoints". Reconciling these views requires a thoughtful balancing of assistance and control, of mental and system representations, and of abstract process and contextualized workflow. This workshop examines the gap between HCI and artificial intelligence, with the goal of improving usability of AI systems.

Mori, Junichiro, Basselin, Nathalie, Kröner, Alexander and Jameson, Anthony (2008): Find me if you can: designing interfaces for people search. In: Proceedings of the 2008 International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2008. pp. 377-380. Available online

Selecting relevant people is crucial for collaborative systems exploiting other users' experiences. With the new developments of the Web and ubiquitous technologies, various user data may support people selection. Given the wide range of user data sources, the question is now how to select appropriate users meeting the information seeker's goal. We propose recommendations for the design of people search interfaces, providing an overview of the user data and tools of relevance and two examples of how such recommendations can be met in one single interface, ensuring the selection of appropriate and reachable people. We also show applications of people search interfaces in different scenarios.

International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2002 January 13-16, 2002, San Francisco, California, USA. pp. 178-179. Available online

We are exploring a class of decision-theoretic handheld systems that give a user personalized advice about how to explore an indoor area in search of products or information. An initial user test in a simple mockup of a shopping mall showed that even novice PDA users accepted the system immediately and were able to achieve their shopping goals faster than when using a paper map of the mall. A key issue is the extent to which spontaneous user behavior can be accommodated within this framework.

An intelligent user interface sometimes needs to present a sequence of related recommendations to a user, in spite of being uncertain in advance as to whether (and with what success) the user will follow each recommendation. There are potential advantages to the use of decision-theoretic planning methods which yield an optimal policy for the situation-dependent presentation of recommendations. This approach is discussed with reference to an example involving route instructions given by an airport assistance system.

Jameson, Anthony, Groszmann-Hutter, Barbara, March, Leonie and Rummer, Ralf (2000): Creating an Empirical Basis for Adaptation Decisions. In: Lieberman, Henry (ed.) International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2000 January 9-12, 2000, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. pp. 149-156. Available online

How can an adaptive intelligent interface decide what particular action to perform in a given situation, as a function of perceived properties of the user and the situation? Ideally, such decisions should be made on the basis of an empirically derived causal model. In this paper we show how such a model can be constructed given an appropriately limited system and domain: On the basis of data from a controlled experiment, an influence diagram for making adaptation decisions is learned automatically. We then discuss why this method will often be infeasible in practice, and how parts of the method can nonetheless be used to create a more solid basis for adaptation decisions.

Jameson, Anthony, Schafer, Ralph, Weis, Thomas, Berthold, Andre and Weyrath, Thomas (1999): Making Systems Sensitive to the User's Time and Working Memory Constraints. In: Maybury, Mark T. (ed.) International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 1999 January 5-8, 1999, Redondo Beach, California, USA. pp. 79-86. Available online

Recent advances in user modeling technology have brought within reach the goal of having systems adapt to temporary limitations of the user's available time and working memory capacity. We first summarize empirical research by ourselves and others that sheds light on the causes and consequences of these (continually changing) resource limitations. We then present a decision-theoretic approach that allows a system to assess a user's resource limitations and to adapt its behavior accordingly. This approach is illustrated with reference to the performance of the prototype assistance system READY.
