Spoerri, Anselm (2004): MetaCrystal: visualizing the degree of overlap between different search engines. In: Proceedings of the 2004 International Conference on the World Wide Web 2004. pp. 378-379.

MetaCrystal enables users to visualize and control the degree of overlap between the results returned by different search engines. Several linked overview tools support rapid exploration, facilitate complex filtering operations and guide users toward relevant information. MetaCrystal addresses the problem of the effective fusion of different search results by helping users to visually combine and filter the top results returned by the different engines. Users can apply weights to the search engines to create their own ranking functions. They can control the degree of overlap by modifying the URL directory depth used to match documents or by changing the number of top documents being compared.

Spoerri, Anselm (2002): Souvenir: flexible note-taking tool to pinpoint and share media in digital libraries. In: JCDL02: Proceedings of the 2nd ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2002. p. 383.

Digital media audio/video can be difficult to search and share in a personal way. Souvenir is a software system that offers users a flexible and comprehensive way to use their handwritten or text notes to retrieve and share specific media moments. Users can take notes on a variety of devices, such as the paper-based CrossPad, the Palm Pilot and standard keyboard devices. Souvenir segments handwritten notes into an effective media index without the need for handwriting recognition. Users can use their notes to create hyperlinks to random-access media stored in a digital library. Souvenir also has web publishing and email capabilities to enable anyone to access or email media moments directly from a web page. Souvenir annotations capture information that can not be easily inferred by automatic media indexing tools.

Spoerri, Anselm (1995): InfoCrystal: A Visual Information Retrieval Interface. In: Proceedings of the Eighteenth Annual International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval 1995. p. 367.

The InfoCrystal uses a simple visual metaphor to enable users to deal with some of the complexities inherent in information retrieval. The InfoCrystal can be used both as a visualization tool and a visual query language to help users search for information. In particular, it allows users to specify Boolean as well as vector-space queries graphically. In this demonstration we provide an overview of the key features of the InfoCrystal and its implementation. We also present the results of two experiments that demonstrate that the InfoCrystal can be successfully used by novice users to specify an information need, where the users only received a short training tutorial.
