Current place of employment:
Graz University of Technology

Currently, I am Univ.-Prof. at the Graz University of Technology (research group of Applied Software Engineering). My research concentrates on different aspects of intelligent systems and business informatics such as knowledge-based configuration of complex services & products, knowledge-based recommenders in e-commerce, psychological & marketing-oriented aspects of consumer buying behaviour and model-based diagnosis with a special focus on knowledge acquisition and requirements engineering. In these research areas I coordinate industrial and research projects, organize scientific events and publish in related books, international journals and conferences. Furthermore, I am co-founder and CEO of ConfigWorks GmbH.

Gemmis, Marco de, Felfernig, Alexander, Lops, Pasquale, Ricci, Francesco, Semeraro, Giovanni and Willemsen, Martijn C. (2012): RecSys'12 workshop on human decision making in recommender systems. In: Proceedings of the 2012 ACM Conference on Recommender Systems 2012. pp. 347-348.

Interacting with a recommender system means to take different decisions such as selecting an item from a recommendation list, selecting a specific item feature value (e.g., camera's size, zoom) as a search criteria, selecting feedback features to be critiqued in a critiquing based recommendation session, or selecting a repair proposal for inconsistent user preferences when interacting with a knowledge-based recommender. In all these situations, users face a decision task. This workshop (Decisions@RecSys) focuses on approaches for supporting effective and efficient human decision making in different types of recommendation scenarios.

Felfernig, Alexander, Chen, Li and Mandl, Monika (2011): RecSys'11 workshop on human decision making in recommender systems. In: Proceedings of the 2011 ACM Conference on Recommender Systems 2011. pp. 389-390.

Interacting with a recommender system means to take different decisions such as selecting a song/movie from a recommendation list, selecting specific feature values (e.g., camera's size, zoom) as criteria, selecting feedback features to be critiqued in a critiquing based recommendation session, or selecting a repair proposal for inconsistent user preferences when interacting with a knowledge-based recommender. In all these scenarios, users have to solve a decision task. The major focuses of this workshop (Decisions@RecSys) were approaches for efficient human decision making in different types of recommendation scenarios.

Felfernig, Alexander, Mandl, Monika, Tiihonen, Juha, Schubert, Monika and Leitner, Gerhard (2010): Personalized user interfaces for product configuration. In: Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2010. pp. 317-320.

Configuration technologies are well established as a foundation of mass customization which is a production paradigm that supports the manufacturing of highly-variant products under pricing conditions similar to mass production. A side-effect of the high diversity of products offered by a configurator is that the complexity of the alternatives may outstrip a user's capability to explore them and make a buying decision. In order to improve the quality of configuration processes, we combine knowledge-based configuration with collaborative and content-based recommendation algorithms. In this paper we present configuration techniques that recommend personalized default values to users. Results of an empirical study show improvements in terms of, for example, user satisfaction or the quality of the configuration process.

Felfernig, Alexander, Teppan, Erich, Friedrich, Gerhard and Isak, Klaus (2008): Intelligent debugging and repair of utility constraint sets in knowledge-based recommender applications. In: Proceedings of the 2008 International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2008. pp. 217-226.

Recommenders support effective product retrieval processes for online users. These systems propose repair actions in situations where no solution can be found and derive recommendations including a set of explanations as to why a certain product has been selected. In this context utility constraints (scoring rules) have to be defined which specify the way utilities of products, explanations, and repair alternatives are determined. Such constraints can be faulty which means that they calculate rankings in a way not expected by marketing and sales experts. The maintenance and repair of such constraints is an extremely error-prone task. In this paper we present an intelligent environment which supports the automated adaptation of faulty utility constraints taking into account existing marketing and sales requirements. In this context we discuss experiences from commercial projects.

The complexity of product assortments offered by e-Commerce platforms requires intelligent sales assistance systems alleviating the retrieval of solutions fitting to the wishes and needs of a customer. Knowledge-based recommender applications meet these requirements by allowing the calculation of personalized solutions based on an explicit representation of product, marketing and sales knowledge stored in an underlying recommender knowledge base. Unfortunately, in many cases faulty models of recommender user interfaces are defined by knowledge engineers and no automated support for debugging such process designs is available. This paper presents an approach to automated debugging of faulty process designs of knowledge-based recommenders which increases the productivity of user interface development and maintenance. The approach has been implemented for a knowledge-based recommender environment within the scope of the Koba4MS project.
