In 2001, CHI featured an unusual panel session: Marketing people were actually invited to come to CHI to explain what they did and why it was important to the objectives of SIGCHI. Boyd de Groot, Peter Eikelboom, and Florian Egger organized the session in which I was privileged to participate. As they remarked about how extraordinary it was to have dedicated marketing professionals at CHI, especially in presenter roles, the comments being exchanged among CHI professionals gave me the feeling that I was in a "Dilbert" comic strip, listening to the amusing, outrageous jibes of those characters.

Marcus, Aaron (2004): It's about time. In Interactions, 11 (6) pp. 16-21

What is it about time that fascinates us so much? Perhaps we are challenged because time is not resident in any particular object that we can hold, but we can see its effects when we stare at the sweeping second hand, at leaves turning a color for another cycle of the seasons, or at the face of an old friend whom we have not seen in years. We become aware of time if we are forced to sit still, or look at speeded-up or slowed-down (time-lapse) photography, film, or video, but most often when we see the world in motion, dynamically evolving. Philosophers, poets, physicists, painters, and psychologists have spent their lives analyzing the etiology (causes and beginnings), ontology (essence), eschatology (end), and epistemology (what we can know) of time. Across most civilizations, cultures, and historic epochs, analysts and synthesizers (that is, designers) have tried to explore what we understand about time and how we can use this knowledge.

Marcus, Aaron (2001): Cross-cultural user-interface design for work, home, play, and on the way. In: IEEE ACM 19th International Conference on Computer Documentation 2001. pp. 221-222. Available online

User interface design requires good visual design of metaphors, mental models, navigation, appearance, and interaction to represent data, functions, tasks, roles, organizations, and people. Techniques of simplicity, clarity, and consistency can improve the communication effectiveness of user interfaces for the Web, mobile devices and information appliances, and performance (productivity) tools. In particular, the use of appropriate typography, layout, color, animation, and symbolism can assist developers to achieve more efficient, effective communication to more diverse user communities.

Marcus, Aaron (1998): Metaphor Design in User Interfaces. In ACM SIGDOC *Journal of Computer Documentation, 22 (2) pp. 43-57

Marcus draws on his considerable consulting experience to give a practitioner's tour of metaphor use in computer interfaces. He introduces the relevant terms and distinctions as background, then summarizes the history of metaphors in computing, noting both advantages (borrowed familiarity) and disadvantages (failure to transfer easily across cultures). The discussion culminates in a detailed, thoroughly illustrated case study of how Marcus and his colleagues iteratively developed suitable metaphors for use in software to assist travel agents. He also includes over two dozen references on metaphor related to user interfaces.

Computer-based products with multimedia user interfaces will need to communicate large amounts of data and functions, as well as concepts and emotional values, to increasingly diverse users. Using metaphors to embody complex structures and processes is one technique available to user interface developers. The article discusses kinds of metaphors and metaphor design scenarios.

Sophisticated user interfaces will need to communicate facts, concepts, and emotional values in multimedia environments, especially for large amounts of data and large numbers of functions in consumer products for increasingly diverse users. Using metaphors to embody complex structures and processes is one technique familiar to user interface developers. The article discusses kinds of metaphors, metaphor design scenarios, and demonstrates cultural diversity in user interface design.

Angiolillo, Joel S., Marcus, Aaron, Casey, Steven M. and Dumais, Susan (1991): Designing Usable Documentation: New Directions for Human Factors. In: Proceedings of the Human Factors Society 35th Annual Meeting 1991. pp. 249-250.

The Human Factors community has virtually ignored one of the most important components of the extended user interface, user documentation. Last year at the 34th Annual Meeting in Orlando there was only one paper on either the design or use of documentation. By comparison, there were approximately a hundred papers related to screen design for video display terminals. The same disparity shows up in the Human Factors Journal. Last year there were no papers on documentation and eleven on accessing information from video display terminals. This lack of research in the human factors of documentation is surprising for several reasons: First, documentation is ubiquitous and it is big business. Just about every software package and every piece of hardware comes with its own manual today. Second, the importance of documentation to the usability of a product is not a secret. Alphonse Chapanis, in his presidential address delivered at the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Human Factors Society, told the audience "A very large and important area of human factors engineering [has been] almost entirely neglected. This area consists of the language and the words that are attached to the tools, machines, systems, and operations with which we are concerned." Third, there is no shortage of interesting applied research questions in this area. To name a few: -- When and why do users turn to a manual? -- Does format affect perceived usability? How? -- How do people access information in a document? How can that access be made easier? -- How do technical writers create technical instructions? -- How can documentation be better integrated with online help and error support systems? Although all the participants on the panel have been actively studying the use of documentation, the focus of the panel will not be a recounting of past research. Rather the panelists will offer us direction, based on their extensive experience, for the next decade and beyond. Where are we going? What do we need to know so that we can build a science of documentation? Why have so many human factors practitioners shied away from documentation? How can we make significant improvements to the usability of documents? What form will the documentation of the year 2000 take, and how can human factors contribute to its usability?

This paper addresses issues in the human factors of computer program documentation. We develop a framework for research on enhancing the interface to the source code of computer programs through designing and automating the production of effective typeset representations of the source text. Principles underlying the design research and examples of sample production are presented.

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience.

-- David Liddle, From Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996
